Discovering the Beauty of a Naturalistic Garden in Victoria
Rhonda Watson's garden in Trentham, nestled in the heart of regional Victoria, is a beautiful testament to the harmonious relationship between nature and thoughtful design. Crafted by renowned garden designer Tim Pilgrim, this enchanting space showcases an immersive blend of vibrant perennials and grasses, which evolve with the changing seasons.
The Journey to a Flourishing Garden
In 2015, Rhonda relocated from Geelong to Trentham, where she established her eco-friendly retail business, The Green Store. Seeking to create a sustainable and beautiful haven, Rhonda purchased a quarter-acre block where she built her energy-efficient home. By collaborating with Tim Pilgrim in 2019, she envisioned a naturalistic garden that would blend seamlessly with her contemporary dwelling, which is clad in dark Colorbond and timber.
A Garden That Breathes Life
Tim's design philosophy embraces a natural look, drawing inspiration from the Wombat State Forest nearby. He employed a prairie-style approach, layering various plant types to mimic the diversity seen in nature. With soil mounds strategically placed to create height, Tim’s design allows for a winding path that adds depth and intrigue to the garden.
The Seasons Unfolding
Since its planting in May 2020, the garden has flourished spectacularly. Rhonda beams with pride as she recalls watching her garden transform through 2020's favorable weather. “It was flourishing by September and prolific by December,” Rhonda shared. The garden has been attracting local wildlife, with birds enjoying the various habitats created among the grasses and perennials.
Community and Sustainability
Trentham is not just a backdrop for Rhonda's garden; it is a vibrant community deeply invested in ecological consciousness and sustainable practices. Rhonda notes, “Many people are interested in gardens in Trentham, and they have a lot of pride in their patch.” Her garden reflects this ethos, where self-sown plants bring an added layer of natural charm, enhancing the wild, romantic appearance.
Benefits of Naturalistic Gardening
Embracing a naturalistic approach offers numerous advantages. Not only does it minimize maintenance, but it establishes a unique ecosystem that fosters biodiversity. As Rhonda walks through her garden, the sense of joy and serenity is palpable. “I love watching the bees return in spring; it’s a rewarding experience,” she states.
Visiting Rhonda’s Garden
For those eager to explore Rhonda's stunning garden, special visits were hosted during the Open Gardens Victoria event, drawing over 600 new admirers in 2023. People marveled at the fact that such beauty was achieved in just three years. Rhonda enthuses, “It’s been an amazing journey, and I can’t wait for the next season to unveil new surprises.”
